06-12 Spend your anniversary with a bear
Well, that's what we tried to do on our first anniversary. After brunch Sunday morning, we decided on a spontaneous trip to the zoo to see Hamms the bear. From a dead Detroit News link:
After that, we picked up a carrot cake from the bakery where our wedding cake came from, and a bottle of Lagavulin 16 year. For the record, Islay malts are my favorite kind, so I'll see you at Christmas. After a decent Italian dinner, carrot cake and Scotch made a nice end to a fine day.
Hamms, a bear with a snout scarred by pitchforks, could tell some heart-touching stories, too. Once the mascot for a beer brewing company, Hamms was sold to a private owner. The bear spent 20 years separated from his own kind, with trespassers on his owner's farm jabbing and poking him. After biting his owner, Hamms was about to be destroyed. But the Detroit Zoo took him in.Now that's heartwarming. Unfortunately, the day got hot pretty fast and Hamms did what most bears do on 80-plus-degree sunny days, disappeared into his cave. That's ok, because we decided to get a membership so we can now see Hamms any old day.

Those animated Hamm's beer commercials from the 1970s and 1980s were the best. "From the land of sky blue water..." Yeah, I remember them 25 years later. The mark of great ad design. #
